Minnesota Vital Records and Health Statistics


Minnesota department of health oversees and manages the collection, and distribution of public health and vital statistics data. The department works concurrently with other state and local agencies to provide technical assistance to users to procure the vital records, sort and solve problems and upgrade to meet the emerging health trends.

  • The Office of Vital Records maintains a uniform system of registration and manages all certified copies of vital records and all related events registered in Minnesota.

  • The Minnesota Office of Vital Records does not maintain any record of marriages or divorces.

    -Copies of marriage certificates are available from the county that issued the marriage license.

    -Divorce decrees are available from the county that granted the divorce.

  • All records for births that occurred in Minnesota from 1900 to present may be available from the Office of Vital Records. Certificate of births that occurred before 1900 may be obtained from the county's local issuance office where the birth occurred.

  • All records for deaths that occurred in Minnesota from 1908 to present may be available from the Office of Vital Records. Certificate of deaths that happened before 1908 may be obtained from the county's local issuance office where the death occurred

  • How to obtain a birth or death certificate?

    -Required Valid ID proof
    -Fees for birth certificate: $26 (Each additional copy of the same record costs $19)
    -Fees for death certificate: $13 (Each additional copy of the same record costs $6)
    -(Fees are non-refundable, as per Minnesota Statutes, section 144.226)
